Ancient Reginna Minori and Maiori are now two popular seaside resorts with a long and noble history. Minori, where the Amalfi Maritime Republic arsenals were situated, dates back to Roman times. Near the seafront is the basilica of Santa Trofimena, built in the 12th-13th centuries and then rebuilt in the 1800s. The church houses the relics of the ancient patron saint of the town, Santa Trofimena, in an elaborate altar in the crypt.

Maiori is like an amphithetre at the end of Tramonti valley. It was founded in the 9th century but is today a modern town, rebuilt after a flood in 1954. The fine beaches and good bathing facilities have made it one of the most visited towns on the coast. The 18th-century campanile on 12th-century Santa Maria a Mare towers over the Maior stream. After the lovely beach of Erchie, Cetara was the easternmost possession of Amalfi.

Cooking utensils, plates, vases and tiles have been made here since the 1400s. In the mid-18th century, Vietri sul Mare became known as the majolica-makers’ district. The most original items made were the tiles painted with religious themes, which you can still see in streets, private homes and churches.
